I am now retired, but when I worked as an IT professional I was used to SAN, NAS and mirrored server backup solutions. At home I used an external drive for my main backups plus a small NAS for longer term backups. I had used a variety of software solutions, but invariably went back to Windows 7 backup. It was painfully slow and prevented useful use of my PC until it had finished.

I was running short on backup space and decided to go for another external drive. The Seagate looked like very good value. It came with it’s own software, but I was just after the drive, or so I thought.

I installed the drive and software. Initially the software did not install properly, but I was successful second time. I’m glad I persisted. The whole package is brilliant. I have set the backup for continuous backup. It just potters in the background backing up everything I want. Very fast and completely unobtrusive.

    Highly recommended.

An update from September 2020. The software had now been updated several times and has seriously lost its appeal for me. I found my CPU regularly hitting 70 degrees with nothing obvious happening. I tracked the culprit to Seagate Tools. I turned it off and the temperature plummeted to mid 20s. I moved from continuous backup to daily. The daily backup did not happen. I tried to force a manual backup , but the programme just hung. Scratching my head a bit now. Why can’t they leave well alone.?

All of the high capacity drives are SMR types with very quickly dropping write speeds and sometimes even trouble in read speeds.
Frequent file deletions will ruin it and you need to format the drive frequently and then rewrite your files.
It’s ONLY MEANT for write once read many type usage.
PLEASE DON’T BUY seagate. They purposely make it like so. And then your drive also fails very fast as unnecessary write and read operations need to be performed to overcome the obstacle of SMR drives. This causes overheating, my drives were always running hotter. And they will fail fast. Not PORTABLE. PLEASE DON’T CARRY this drive in your bag or briefcase etc. The shocks will cause damage to drive very easily. And Amazon has started shipping it without outside packing. Only provides plastic pouch for external packing. And delivery people will throw it around, this most drives arrive already damaged to some extent.
Amazon return my money fast. Stop harrasing me after doing return pickup. It has been long enough

NOTE: All are tested on windows 10 with USB 3.0 compatible port & cable.

    writing speed:
I got maximum of 109MB/s for *.zip file
avg 50MB/s for some *.mkv files to exFAT & NTFS format

    reading Speed:
avg 100MB/s for same *.zip file
    maximum 110MB/s for *.mkv file

I am facing heating issue while transferring files & connected standby.

This is the first drive that failed on me. Is not even 6 months old. Now the drive is undetectable, not even in disk management. My 3.8TB of data just gone. I am trying to get Seagate customer care to respond but so far no luck. I was about to buy a new one but am reluctant now. And one more thing, the speeds are terrible””

“”UPDATE: One more drive I recently purchased is having transfer issues. speed drops to KBs in between every few seconds. active time remains 100% during drops

This is my 10th Seagate HDD purchase. I really love seagate external hard drives. I have 1 TB, 1.5 TB and 2 TB. A few days ago, when i saw this new model edition and i thought of giving it try. I liked the design but the problem is its in ”exFAT” system format. Usually, most of the drive will be in NTFS which is quite user friendly. But this ”exFAT” has biggest problem with transfer speed. So, i have to format to NTFS and now, transfer speed is good. So, as of now, its better to go for older model than new one. Because full formatting takes hours and it just painful and consumes time. Yes, you can go for quick format but full format identifies bad sectors and it literally completes formatting procedure.

Of course, ”exFAT” is advance file system of FAT32. And also it detected with Sony LED TV. But the problem is transfer speed. And also i read the file system formats in Seagate website, especially about ”exFAT” file system, kindly see below:

“exFAT: generally compatible with Mac and Windows. exFAT is not a journaled file system which means it can be more susceptible to data corruption when errors occur or the drive is not disconnected properly from the computer”

This is not user friendly but you have to format it to NTFS to make it as user friendly. Therefore, i leave it up to you, guys! and its your call for going for this new edition of Seagate.

After spending two day adding data whilst attached directly to PC I then attached to a powered Amazon hub – it would not work, not recognised and started to click. After some help from Amazon they put me in touch with Seagate customer support – They were very helpful they even told me that the 5TB would not work with a hub!!! They also recommend that no USB powered portable drive should be attached to a hub not enough power. Some lower TB drives might work but it is still not recommended. I returned the product for a refund as I have no spare ports on PC.

    Verwaltung -> Computerverwaltung -> Datenträgerverwaltung

    Liked coz :
    – really small, almost the size of a regular mouse
    – silent operation, other hard disks I previously had had
this whirring sound that was slightly audible
    – fast copying from/to PC, almost an average of 120MB/s
transfer speed while copying 57GB data to the drive

    Disliked coz :
    – got only 4.54 TB out of the 5 TB, a bit disappointed to
    lose ~500GB of useable memory
    – the device might have slight heating issues, mine heated
up quickly in about 2 mins while transferring some 20
    GB data to it
    – the hard disk case seems to be a bit fragile, may get
    damaged upon a fall ( don’t test it out , unless u r filthy
rich ). I liked the disk enclosure from Transcend but they
offer HDDs with max capacity of 4TB only

Don’t get cheated by reading the description ” Kaspersky antivirus subscription for 1year worth rs.599 “. It is only a marketing strategy. You will not get any such subscription.

Just doing some copying but it was extremely slow. This is not a review per se but there is an easy fix to speed up writes. Go into Device Manage, double click the drive and select the Policies tab. Tick ‘Better Performance’ and tick ‘Enable Write Cacheing’. OK it and write speeds will be much improved. Like anything though keep a backup if the data is important to you.

    You’re welcome.

EDIT: This drive started giving errors and Seagate Tools reported the drive as defective. I had to buy another drive from Western Digital to backup my data to. I then did a complete format of the drive and it reported as fine in Seagate Tools. However since then it gave another error that disk repair fixed. I no longer trust this drive anymore so use it as a backup drive/scratch disk.

I plugged it up and it had 7 bad sectors according to disk drill right away. I thought surely that’s a mistake. Tried it anyways because I was desperate to get the data off my old failing drive. Backup up 4+ Tb of data to this piece of garbage and and bricks. Starts freezing my computer and then not booting up at all. Then the click of death. What a waste of time and now my old failing hard drive is 4+ Tb closer to not being able to get the data off it at all. Thanks a lot. I have been buying these devices for years. I have 15 TB of seagate drives and another 15 Tb of backups for them. So I walk around with 30tb on me at all times. I’m thinking they cheaper out on the new drives or something. Doesn’t seem as high quality as the last gen so far. Hopefully just my bad experience on this one. Another one arriving tomorrow. Hoping for a better experience.

    -Update-

2nd Drive now has the click of death.

I bought two of these to use in a Raspberry Pi backup project. Originally I was going to go for a 2TB set. But then I stumbled across these 4TB Seagates for about 77.99. Which worked out an extra tenner for an extra 2TB of space with a known hard drive manufacturer. I thought it was rather a steal.

The drives as expected are supplied with everything they need to get them running, in this case, a drive and a USB 3 cable. There is pre-loaded backup software you can use on windows or mac. But these were to be used on Linux so copied the software off in case I feel like using it later, and wiped the drives.

They are quite compact as to be expected with a 2.5 but the case does not add much additional size. One of my qualms was the minuscule activity light on these. Which seems to only be white other drives I have used differentiate USB 3 and 2 with different led colours. As per usual with most 2.5 drives there is no need for external power so long as your ports can maintain the 1.5 ampage need for USB 3, otherwise you will need to get a powered hub.

The drive spins at 5400rpm which people would scoff at in the past but you have to remember with drives being larger now they store more data in a sector of a drive which means they need to spin less especially if you keep them defragged which Windows 10 pretty much does in the background now which means your drive should be reading sequentially anyway.

Testing the drives on CrystalMark they seem to get around 150mb/s read and write sequentially. I compared my results to an internal drive which seemed to get similar results. As I am using mine for backups reading is more important than writing but both results were pleasing. Random read and writes dropped to between 5 and 7mb/s, again as mentioned in the last paragraph, that is the importance of keeping a drive defragged. Stops it needing to spin like a DJ.

I formatted one with NTFS as I need it to be readable by Windows and the other using EXT4 as I do not want anything Windows to touch it well not easily anyway both formats went through with ease, I did not expect any problems but I have had a few drives despise certain formats before so I thought it was worth a mention.

Overall, this is a very nice piece of hardware and I would highly recommend it to anyone who needs a large amount of storage at a reasonable cost from a reputable hard drive manufacturer.
