inside is a WD Blue WD60EZRZ HDD with an 8 second idle timer which can’t be turned off or changed to a longer duration. Look for WD Load Cycle Count issue for more information.
Edit: A work around for the LCC issue is to use the KeepAliveHD software from GitHub

I’ve been a regular customer of WD My Book since 2011, so far I’ve bought 36 TB of storage of WD products, of which 35 TB are My Books. Eight 4TB, one 2TB and one 1TB My Books. So far the performance of all hard disks have been very good, with no issues at all. My advice would be to use them with care, switch off the plug point before you plug it in, and do the ‘safely remove hardware’s before you plug it out. Now planning to buy a NAS drive and attach my hard disks to it. As a delighted customer, I would go for WD any day.

Looks cheap, you can see the actual hard-drive from the slit above. Slits are provided for ventilation. No blinking LED to show whether drive is ON or not. No separate ON/OFF switch on the drive, cannot plug it to a common power adapter, as you cannot separately turn it off. However, works silently.
Warning: Any drive that is connected by USB 3 (including this drive) has a frustrating habit of randomly disconnecting from Windows Laptop / Computer. Google how to avoid this problem by changing some Windows settings. This is not a problem of the drive. After making necessary Windows settings, my drive is rarely disconnecting.

I had ordered 2 HDDs 8 months ago. Whenever i work on my PC (while the hard disk in use) and If suddenly power supply goes down, The drive gets write protected as its sectors gets damaged instantly. Then we have to resolve this issue by scanning bad sectors again and again. Then it becomes ready to use.
I had faced this problem every time when power goes off. Finally one of my 2 HDDs has become useless. It’s not getting connected to the system. I had also tried it on MAC, but it’s not appearing or not being formatted to use again.
I had lost my very important data.

I am very disappointed by this product. It just doesn’t get detected for a whole day once disconnected by mistake. It has not been more than 5 months, the disk is spoiled and it’s not at all being detected anymore. I am a music director and all my projects and data are in that and now I regret very much that I’ve bought this product. Working with this type of gadget is very risky and dangerous I would say. May be only this desktop model is risky. The portable one is not as much risky as it gets detected immediately if disconnected by mistake. Buyers please be careful if you can store it without touching or without a power break, inly then it is good otherwise it is a useless idea!

I bought 2 of these on prime day sale, so I got each for 12500. There is all this commotion that WD have changed the internal drives in My Books and elements to SMR. Yes they did, but only for the capacities lesser than 8 TB. So if you buy an 8 TB and above drive, they will be CMR. Coming to speeds, you can get upto 210 MBps when writing to outer Cylinders and 110 MBps when writing to inner cylinders. The models I got are not Helium filled and the temperatures may rise above 56° C if continuously used and are not cooled. Heat is bad for hard drives and I recommend you to cool them by placing a 12v DC fan on the top of it. I can say these drives are cheap by comparing the price/TB in the Indian market. Of course these are not portable but I’ve used both WD and Seagate portable drives and I can say that they too get heated up when using continuously and the speeds are very low (110 MBps write on outer Cylinders and 50-60 MBps write on inner cylinders) compared to My Book desktop drive. This is very good drive and I recommend buying them.

Enclosure design is excellent. WD has provided detachable plugs suited for India. Cable length of adapter is long while usb cable could have been little longer.
It does not have any sort of led indicator to show whether drive is working or not.
Usable space is around 3.6 GB. The drive comes formatted in EXFAT. It is better to delete and partition to NTFS if used in Windows or EXT4 for linux.
As per Crystal disk info the internal drive model is WD40EDAZ which is SMR drive. Eventhough read speed is high write speed fluctuates between 90 MB/S and a very low 10 MB/S.
This drive is suitable for people who just store data and do not re write frequently.
I had to return and refund due to the SMR hdd present inside this enclosure.
